On Saturday, my dissertation chair, my fellow grad student, and I presented our panel at the conference. I don't wanna brag, but . . . I think we did really well. Although we had very disparate topics for our papers--I spoke on feminist testimony practices, Laura on queer performance art, and Tiffany on Latino children's literature--we created a cohesive narrative around our discussions, and our papers were all very polished (we worked hard!!) After our talk, we celebrated at lunch with mimosas and bloody marys. I hadn't had a drink in a while and got a little tipsy (I was dumping all the milk I pumped on the trip.)
In the evening, Laura and I (since this was our first time to DC) went on a little tour of The Mall. I was glad we went in the evening because most of the monuments looked so beautiful at sunset. I was surprised by how moved I was by seeing some of the monuments, especially the memorials for the Vietnam and Korean Wars. The soldiers of the Korean War monument were especially eerie and profound.
Even though it looks like a large . . . well, phallus, I thought the Washington Monument was particularly striking in the fading light.
I also saw the White House, the Lincoln Monument, and the WWII Memorial, which were beautiful structures.
And back in California, the possum had developed a little fever. Papa reported to me that she spent most of the day sleeping and that when she was awake, all she wanted to do was cuddle. I don't want to think of the little dear being sick, but I can't believe I missed out on all that cuddling! She's so squirmy now, I can barely get a little hug out of her these days.
