Day 179: Loss

So I had been planning on writing this post about my seeming knack for losing sunglasses. The pair I'm wearing in the photo is the fourth pair I've had since returning from Australia (that's right, I've lost three pairs in just under two months).

But . . . then, earlier this evening, Tom and I found out about an even more profound loss. Aley, a friend we made in Japan, died of cancer this week. She was only 30 years old and had been ill for sometime. When we knew her in Japan, she was a sweet and energetic person. As Tom said, she always wanted to do everything. Although, we had more or less lost touch with her over the years since leaving Japan (but still kept in contact via Facebook), it feels very surreal thinking about her being gone. I really feel for her family who no doubt knows more than anyone how absolutely irreplaceable she was. And as Tom and I were having a very indulgent meal out of tapas, sangria, and dessert, I couldn't help but think that Aley would have definitely enjoyed it.
