Day 358: Tough Love

As some of you may have seen today on Facebook, I received a call this morning to set up a phone interview for a position at Delta College, a school in Michigan. While I'm not sure if the interview will actually land me the job, I am super happy just to have the interview because it means I have submitted at least one decent application packet. It's great just to have this little bit of validation as I move forward on my job search.

Today, I also had a meeting with my dissertation chair, which was a bit less successful. I told her that because of my teaching schedule and the job applications I will probably not be able to finish my dissertation until the end of summer. She wasn't having this and said she wanted it done by June (which means I'd have to have it finished by mid-April). I don't even know if this is humanely possible (unless of course I do nothing but work on the dissertation), but she wants me to send her everything I have at the moment so she can help me develop a plan to finish by June. I'm completely embarrassed by how little I have, but maybe some tough love is just what I need to get this thing done. As she said, "It doesn't have to be perfect. It doesn't even have to be good. It just has to be done." I know this, but I really don't want some sh*tty document by yours truly sitting on the shelves of UC Riverside's library.

So it looks like it will be another late night here. I'm working on another job application, this time for a school that has two advantages over Delta--it's in California and it pays a lot more money.

And thank goodness for hot cocoa.

  1. You can do it Helen!! you can pull this off -she's right....it's just having a plan. Plan your work, work your plan. Make sure you include in the plan time with LB & Tom, but it does work, I had done that not so long ago as I was felt i was juggling too much, by writing it all down and it giving it a time it actually helps relax and you know what you've got it covered, i even scheduled down the housework and cooking. And think if there's anything that can be delegated to anyone else too. I'm sure you're work will be of very high standard. Congratulations on the interview!
